PROBLEM: Create an intuitive interface for a new self-service retail kiosk that uses AI-powered vision to automatically recognize items during checkout in convenience store environments.

DESIGN: Addressed complex design constraints tied to hardware and camera performance, including managing white flashes and user focus between dual screens. Used animation and background motion to guide attention, and optimized layout to reduce visual blocking. Expanded functionality to support loyalty accounts, keyboard entry, and future features. Prototypes were refined to achieve a fully intuitive flow while maintaining consistency with the broader design system.
OUTCOMES: Successfully launched and showcased at NRF. The design was quickly adopted in pilot stores, with strong internal support and positive feedback on the team’s process and collaboration.

INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE: MOM App User Flows

PROBLEM: Design a mobile and tablet app to equip assistants at self-checkout pods with feature-rich, intuitive tools for real-time issue management and customer support.
RESEARCH: Developed personas and prioritized assistant needs around attention management and critical issue response. Conducted field testing with mockups, gathering actionable feedback on core workflows—viewing alerts, monitoring lanes, managing item lists, resolving pending actions, and navigating efficiently. Iterated through A/B tests on item list flows and event prioritization.
DESIGN: Established a clear visual language emphasizing hierarchy and clarity without visual clutter. Explored multiple layouts to identify and prioritize problems quickly. Integrated key POS functions directly into the app and built a companion admin tool to configure self-checkout pod layouts dynamically within the interface.
OUTCOMES: Initial assumptions about color hierarchy and information density were challenged by real-world testing, leading to refined visual strategies. Final designs improved intuitiveness, clarified high-priority tasks, and highlighted critical workflows around theft detection, loyalty verification, and age checks—resulting in a smoother, more responsive assistant experience.

INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE: Associate Mobile User Flows

PROBLEM: Design a mobile version of the Point-of-Sale (POS) cashier interface with equivalent functionality, optimized for on-the-go associates and “lane-busting” scenarios.
RESEARCH: Developed prototypes and conducted usability testing in a real-world cafeteria setting, with guided tasks and video-recorded sessions. Iterated through A/B tests on navigation and task flows. Partnered with SMEs to define mobile-specific tasks and build accurate associate personas. PROBLEM: Design a custom food court interface using existing UI components but reconfigured for a new layout and experience—delivered under extreme time constraints to secure a potential client.
RESEARCH: Partnered with the product owner to translate high-level requirements into testable concepts. Rapidly developed AI-assisted prototypes to validate navigation patterns and quantity adjustment behaviors. Early tests provided critical insight into streamlining user flows without compromising functionality.
DESIGN: Leveraged an existing product as the foundation and conducted focused workshops to determine which features could be reduced or reused for faster development. Consolidated and cross-validated data to ensure accuracy and coverage across use cases.
DESIGN: Early persona documentation were captured in Miro, comprising hundreds of cards and attributes. Systematically identified overlap among personas and refined the set to emphasize distinct functions and goals. Designed data visualization templates to present key traits and context at a glance. Built a functional Figma prototype of the Persona Library with filtering and search capabilities, enabling teams to find relevant personas quickly. Promoted adoption across Product and Development to embed persona usage in daily decision-making.
OUTCOMES: The Persona Library became a key reference for product requirements and design planning, significantly improving cross-team alignment. It was widely linked and used throughout the organization. While the Figma-based prototype validated usability, it lacked long-term scalability—prompting a transition effort toward an HTML web app, which faced hosting limitations. Despite technical constraints, the initiative successfully shifted the company’s culture toward persona-driven design.

DESIGN: Started from the Fixed Lane interface and methodically stripped away unnecessary information and functions to reduce cognitive friction. Designed for intuitive guidance through clear visual hierarchy and step-by-step feedback. Mapped every user flow in detail, including new assistant-support features. Incorporated secondary client-specific options such as bag indicators and contextual prompts. Recognizing that shoppers often look away from the screen, implemented pre-attentive visual cues to recapture focus. Explored accessible design configurations by concentrating all interactive elements within the lower 40% of the screen.
OUTCOMES: The resulting product was a major success—praised for its clarity, simplicity, and intuitive flow. Adopted by Wegmans for in-store trials, it earned exceptional feedback from customers who rarely needed assistance. Early testing prompted refinements such as repositioning the Look Up Item button and improving visibility for key actions. Although accessibility mode was postponed, the foundation proved adaptable for future inclusion. Automatic product recognition was well-received for reducing typing but required optimization to speed up multi-tap interactions. Overall, the design established a benchmark for shopper-friendly self-checkout experiences.

INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE: Fuel UI User Flows

PROBLEM: Design a brand-new point-of-sale interface for fuel service operations—an unfamiliar market requiring integration of standard POS components with entirely new fuel pump controls and behaviors.
RESEARCH: Conducted extensive field research, including site visits to multiple fuel stations and over a dozen hours of recorded cashier interactions and interviews. Built representative personas and analyzed workflows to identify behavioral patterns and task frequency. Grouped functions by context and frequency, then iterated through multiple wireframe revisions and mode explorations. Created focused prototypes to test and refine core interactions before scaling to the full interface.
DESIGN: Aimed to optimize screen real estate to support configurations ranging from two to 50+ pumps. Adopted a horizontal layout for clarity and efficiency, exploring multiple display modes—map view, large tiles, and compact tiles—to accommodate various operational contexts. Introduced modal interactions that adapted dynamically based on user needs. Ensured constant visibility of critical controls, including pump actions and emergency stop. Designed a tap-and-hold gesture for the emergency stop to prevent accidental activation. Carefully arranged elements according to visual scan patterns, balancing prominence with usability.
OUTCOMES: Demonstrated that a fuel management UI could be successfully developed from the core POS component library, achieving flexibility across different pump configurations. Although the initial version was not immediately deployed, it received strong interest and positive feedback from potential clients, leading to the development of a second, more focused iteration. The project validated the adaptability of the company’s design system and expanded its reach into a new retail domain.

PROBLEM: Design a new product for an emerging market segment—data analytics tools for retail loss prevention managers—integrated within the existing Administration web application and centered around actionable data visualizations.
RESEARCH: Initiated with journey-mapping workshops to define user goals and context, leading to the creation of a loss prevention manager persona later validated through collaboration with Wegmans. Focused on modularity and flexibility through adaptive layouts—introducing collapsing sections, fly-outs, and modals to maximize limited screen space. Designed for speed and minimal taps across nearly 1,000 documented screens and flows. Early visual decisions were made without a formal design system, but these experiments informed later consistency and theming across platforms.
OUTCOMES: Delivered a core modular UI that became the foundation for multiple subsequent products, proving the scalability of the design system. Users reported significantly improved intuitiveness and workflow efficiency compared to previous POS applications. Some early aesthetic and layout choices, made under tight constraints, later required revision—particularly around color hierarchy and right-hand usability. Nonetheless, the Fixed Lane redesign established the architectural and interaction backbone for the company’s future UI ecosystem.

INTERACTIVE PROTOTYPE: Speciality POS User Flows

DESIGN: Wayfair approached with urgent concerns about project alignment, prompting an intensive, company-wide effort over the holiday period to meet their goals. Partnered closely with Wayfair’s e-commerce group to translate their online shopping experience into an in-store POS context—a first for their brand. Leveraging the existing Fixed Lane component library, the team reconfigured layouts and flows to align with Wayfair’s provided UX requirements while maintaining strict cost and time limits. Conducted weekly design reviews with their team, refining the layout and interactions to meet both usability and brand expectations.
OUTCOMES: Usability testing showed that 80% of participants found the designs intuitive, requiring only minor adjustments in specific transaction stages. The legacy system was built by engineers without UX consideration, resulting in inconsistent behaviors, poor usability, and constant client frustration. The challenge was to introduce structure, clarity, and user-centered logic into a mission-critical but deeply complex environment.
RESEARCH: Facilitated numerous stakeholder workshops to map user roles, pain points, and task flows. Developed multiple personas and focused initial efforts on a primary user, “Becky the Bookkeeper,” representing cash management operations. Kirlian photography does not use light directly, but instead uses electricity. A Kirlian camera has a very highly charged metal plate on which film is placed. Then items are placed on the film, and the super high voltage then ionizes the air immediately around the item, creating a spark which is recorded on the film. Using a special built Kirlian camera that I constructed, I took this image using Polaroid film using a ring and a coiled copper bracelet. Afterwards, I smudged the emulsion of the film to create colored lines.
